Useful Information

The best time to take a sailing holiday in Greece is between April and October, with peak season being June, July, and August.

High Season

The Meltemi winds are strongest in July and August, making a more exhilarating sailing challenge for the more experienced sailors. These months also fall within the UK school summer holidays, the perfect time for a family holiday, with lots of opportunities for the children to make new friends. Why not try one of our family-friendly flotilla holidays

For easier sailing aim for the end of the summer when the winds are less intense making for more relaxed sailing conditions.

Shoulder Season

April and October benefit from smaller crowds as well as cheaper flights, great yacht availability and reduced costs.

Spring

April - June are the perfect months for those looking for a quieter yacht charter. The winds are milder, the weather is warm and the islands are in full bloom. With the reduced crowds it allows you to enjoy them to the fullest!

Autumn Sailing in Greece

Choose the autumn months to avoid the tourist crowds, enjoy the calmer winds and take in the natural beauty of the islands at a leisurely pace.

May & September

The weather is warm but not too hot with average temperatures around 25ºC (77ºF) and the crowds are lower than the peak summer season.

Late May & June

The crowds are still relatively low but the temperatures have started to rise (average 28ºC / 85ºF) and the waters begin to get warm enough for swimming.

July to September

This is when the waters are at their warmest and it is also the peak tourist time due to the school summer holidays. This is a great time for a sociable family holiday - why not try one of our family-friendly flotilla holidays?

October

This is the end of the main sailing season and a good opportunity to take advantage of lower prices and lighter crowds. The weather is on average 21 - 23ºC and the waters are still warm enough to enjoy a spot of swimming.

In general, the best sailing conditions are from April to October when you can enjoy warm waters, clear skies and reliable winds.

Ionian Sea

The Ionian is great for year-round sailing however the best conditions are late spring to early autumn. The Ionian has hot, dry summers with calmer winds but stronger gusts can occur in the afternoons.

The Aegean Sea

The Meltemi winds provide reliable sailing in the summer months perfect for more experienced sailors looking for a more challenging charter.

The Rainy Season

Typically the rainy season is from November to March and sailing conditions are not always ideal.

The cost of your yacht charter depends on several factors:

Boat Type

The type and size of the yacht you book will dictate the price. A 1 week charter on a 2 - 3 cabin monohull starts around £900 in low season whereas 1 week on a luxury catamaran with a skipper in high season could be upwards of £10,000. These are the 2 extremes of the scale for a 1 week charter and we offer plenty of choices in between.

Charter duration

1 week is a popular choice amongst our sailors and makes the perfect getaway however, a longer charter will give you more time to explore all the Greek islands have to offer. We have a range of 1 and 2 week flotillas, as well as custom bareboat bookings which can be tailored to your timescale.

Time of Year

Lower-priced yacht charters are available in the off-season of April, May, September and October with prices starting to rise in June before peaking in July and August.

Crew

Don't have any sailing experience? No problem! We offer several skippered and crewed options so you can enjoy the yachting lifestyle without the stress. From a simple skippered yacht to fully crewed options, we can arrange a charter to suit your needs.

Flotilla vs Bareboat

Flotilla yacht charters are more expensive than a bareboat charter, but for the extra cost, you are getting the assistance of a lead boat with an experienced crew who are ready to help if you need assistance on your voyage. The flotilla lead crew also arrange social activities and lead you on a carefully curated itinerary. Flotillas are great if you enjoy the social aspects of sailing and are perfect for families, especially during school holidays. Children enjoy making new friends, while adults can unwind and connect with like-minded sailors.

If you are experienced and prefer to discover the islands at your own pace then a bareboat charter is the perfect choice for a relaxing holiday in The Med.

For bareboat charters and flotilla holidays in Greece, you will need ICC qualification.

The port authorities in Greece are now insisting on one of the following practical certificates:

  • RYA ICC (International Certificate of Competence)
  • RYA Coastal, RYA Yachtmaster
  • ASA IPC (International Proficiency Certificate)
  • IYT (International Yacht Training) Passport

If you hold an RYA Day Skipper or ASA104 it will no longer be accepted and you need to obtain either an ICC or IPC from the corresponding issuing body (RYA or ASA).

If your RYA Coastal/Yachtmaster or ASA105/106 certificate is more than 10 years old and does not have a photo ID, then you need to apply for an ICC or IPC.

If you are a member of the RYA or ASA, you may qualify for a discount or free certificate, otherwise, you will have to pay. The approximate cost is £50. Please use these links - RYA application for the ICC or ASA application for the IPC.

The mooring fees in Greece are very minimal, you will find it is one of the cheaper Mediterranean destinations in terms of mooring costs. On average, a town quay mooring in Greece (based on a 40ft monohull) would be €20/night.

There are fewer "full-service marinas" compared with somewhere like Croatia, but these would usually be between €50-70/night.

There is also the ability to free anchor in a lot of places too, which keeps the cost of your mooring fees down considerably.

Our most popular sailing destination in Greece is the South Ionian due to its easy sailing conditions and endless bays to visit; this collection of islands (Lefkas, Kefalonia, Ithaka, Meganisi, Kalamos & Kastos) is perfect for beginners and families but has a charm that keeps our guests returning year after year.

You can also set sail in the Ionian from well-connected Corfu which has great options for sail-and-stay to combine your holiday with one of the island's highly-rated resorts. When on a yacht charter from Corfu, you can also explore Corfu Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site, as well as picture-perfect Paxos.

The main Italian holiday destinations are a hub of activity with Italians and overseas tourists filling the beaches and piazzas. July and August see the highest temperatures, averaging 28-30ºC.

The Island of eternal spring! It is possible to sail throughout the whole year in Tenerife as it has a pleasant subtropical Mediterranean climate. Rainfall is low and average temperatures range between 18 and 27 °C. Usually, the water temperatures are only slightly cooler.

Tenerife is a great sailing destination because of the mild climate and the constant winds. Due to the winter sunshine that Tenerife is blessed with, peak season for tourists often includes December and February.

The island has a drier climate in the south and a cooler climate in the north, a fact that is reflected in the landscape. On the southern and western coasts there is more sunshine, less wind and rainfall and the lowest temperature deviations. Average summer temperatures are around 25ºC-34ºC in the south and average winter temperatures are around 17ºC.

There are large distances between the ports and few sheltered bays due to the islands position in the Atlantic. It is excellent and interesting sailing with strong winds and tides but passage planning and consideration to routes is required.

The island is in a tidal area; the tidal range is between 2-3m. Tidal streams can be up to 3kn.

Tenerife is regarded as a strong wind area and can be demanding even for experienced sailors. Throughout the year there are northeast trade winds that blow strongly and provide good sailing winds. There are often accelerated winds between the Canary Islands adding 10-15kn to the wind strength. Adventurous crews will enjoy the challenge but relaxed sailing is rarely possible.

Marinas in Tenerife start at around €30/night depending on the size of yacht and the time of year. It is worth booking marinas in advance in peak season.

For bareboat yacht charters in Tenerife you will need RYA Coastal Skipper qualification.

There is plenty to see and do on a sailing holiday in Tenerife. See the biggest mountain in Spain - Mount Teide, visit Punta de Teno and Los Gigantes, enjoy the traditional fishing village of Las Galletas and dine on fresh fish or mussels, keep watch for Atlantic wales and dolphins, explore the green island of La Gomera or take in the Carnival of Santa Cruz.

There are seven major islands within the canaries and each one is potentially reachable in a full days sail. As the largest island, you could take a week to explore Tenerife and the nearer islands of La Gomera and El Hierro or take two weeks and take in Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura.

The British Virgin Islands are a fantastic place to experience a sail and stay holiday. With daily flights, you can really make the most of your time in the Caribbean and combine a yacht charter with a hotel stay in the BVI or even Antigua.

The best time to experience everything the BVI has to offer is November through to May, with temperatures between 28°C and 30°C and constant warm tradewinds at 10-20 knots providing excellent sailing. Peak Season

The peak season is December through to April with warm weather and steady winds. It is a lively atmosphere, especially during the festive period with lots of parties and celebrations.

High Season

The high season is from February to March, with warm, dry weather and reliable trade winds the sailing conditions are perfect.

Slow Season

The season begins to slow in May - June though the waters are still warm but the winds much milder

The official currency of the British Virgin Islands is the US Dollar (USD).

As a British Overseas Territory, British Pounds (GBP) were used in the British Virgin Islands once upon a time but the switch was made to US Dollars in 1959.

ATMs are available in the major towns and tourist centres and most larger establishments accept credit or debit cards. Some establishments may not accept American Express. It is recommended to keep cash on you to use at smaller establishments and shops and for taxi rides and tips etc.

A mooring buoy is currently about US $50 per night, to dock in a harbour or at a hotel pontoon prices range from US $100-300 per night depending on the size of your yacht and the destination.

Although useful to have one, a sailing license, certificate or qualification is not required for a BVI yacht charter, however, our partners will need to see a complete sailing resume.

The sailing resume for a BVI Yacht Charter must demonstrate experience as a skipper of a similar type and size (within five feet) of the yacht as the one you are looking to charter. The experience should also be recent and the company will look for experience within the last five years.

The cost of your yacht charter depends on several factors:

Boat Type

The type and size of the yacht you book will dictate the price. 1 week for a bareboat BVI yacht charter on a 2-cabin monohull starts around £300/$370 per day in low season whereas 1 week on a luxury crewed catamaran in high season could be upwards of £5500/$7350 per day. These are the 2 extremes of the scale for a 1 week charter and we offer plenty of choices in between.

Charter duration

1 week is a popular choice for the length of sailing vacation amongst our American sailors and makes the perfect getaway. However, a longer charter of around 10-14 days, which is more popular with our British and European clients and will give you more time to explore all the BVI has to offer and presents you the chance to be slightly more adventurous in your itinerary. We have a range of offers that can be tailored to your timescale.

Time of Year

Lower-priced yacht charters are available in the low season of July to October and mid-season May to June, November to January (excluding Christmas and New Year) with prices peaking in the high season from February to April and Christmas and New Year.

The Seychelles is an archipelago of 115 islands in the Indian Ocean off the coast of East Africa.

The Seychelles Environmental Levy is a fee charged by the Seychelles government to all tourists on a per person/per day basis. The fee contributes to environmental conservation and rehabilitation initiatives. Its aim is to promote sustainable tourism and preserve the beauty and ecosystems of the islands.

Yacht charters in the Seychelles often start from Praslin. From here there are a number of islands within a short sail such as La Digue, Felicite and Marianne.

The Seychelles are a tropical paradise where you can take it easy and soak up the beauty of your surroundings. There are however many things you can do whilst on your sailing holiday in the Seychelles to make the most of your time and experience the best of these magical islands. • Visit Curieuse Marine National Park and take a moment to spot one of the hundred giant turtles that call this island home.
  • Enjoy visiting the capital of the Seychelles, Port Victoria, and soak up some of the history and mixture of cultures that has contributed to this unique group of islands.

The Seychelles are warm all year round. The temperatures are generally between 25-28 degrees Celsius. The wet season is between December and February. Sailing Itineraries for the Seychelles

The ideal length of a sailing holiday in the Seychelles is 7 - 14 days. Once you have invested in the time to travel to the Seychelles it may be worth taking that little bit longer to explore all that the islands have to offer. If you take a 14 day charter it will give you more time to enjoy the beautiful beaches and experience the marine life through swimming, snorkelling and diving.

The Whitsundays are in the Coral Sea on Australia's East coast, on the edge of the Great Barrier Reef. The starting point for yacht charters in the Whitsundays is usually Airlie Beach, a coastal town in Queensland considered the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef.

Some of the top things to do on a yacht charter in the Whitsundays are sail, swim and snorkel.

The Whitsundays are the heart of the Great Barrier Reef and consist of 74 islands. It is an area of outstanding natural beauty and you may well find your own deserted tropical island for the night. Once you've picked up a mooring buoy for the night, turn on the BBQ and watch the sun set.

There are an abundance of stunning beaches to relax on such as Hill Inlet and Whitehaven beach. Their never ending shades of turquoise are unlike any other beaches in the world. Enjoy watching the green turtles riding the waves or the dugong eating the seagrass.

In the winter months of April to August temperatures range from 17-26 degrees Celsius with bright blue skies and sunshine. This period is the dry season. The summer months of January to March is the wet season with frequent tropical rainfalls and temperatures averaging between 24-30 degrees Celsius.

Visit Whitsunday island and head to shore to explore and enjoy the infamous Whitehaven beach, often named the most beautiful beach in the world. Take some shoes with you so you can climb up to Hill inlet lookout and take in the full panoramic view and the stunning colours. Take a short walk round to the secluded Bettys beach and enjoy the pure white sands.

Take your snorkel and fins and using your reef guide take the time to snorkel on one of the many beautiful coral reefs, perhaps between Hayman Island and Hook Bay and then continue round to Butterfly bay to enjoy the batfish swimming around your boat. If you are there in May to September take time to look for the humpback whales on their migratory journey.

For yacht charters in Australia you do not need any formal qualifications however you will need to submit a resume of your sailing experience. When you arrive at the base a skipper will come onboard your yacht with you for a few hours to test your competence. When they are happy they will return to shore and you can commence your charter.

The Whitsundays have some of the best sailing conditions in the world - warm, dry days with steady breezes. For most of the year the winds are South to South Easterly. During the peak summer months they come round to the North/North East. It is a tidal area and there are some stronger currents between the islands that need to be taken into account when passage planning. There are anchorages and mooring buoy fields providing shelter on either side of the islands depending on the wind.

The best time to sail in the Whitsundays is between April and November.

There are only short sailing distances between the main islands of the Whitsundays so a week's charter will give you time to enjoy the different anchorages, explore the reefs and relax on the beautiful beaches in between some excellent sailing.

Yacht charters in the Whitsundays start from Airlie beach in Northern Queensland. Brisbane is 1000km away and Cairns is 600km away. Often people combine their sailing holiday with a road trip on the East coast from either of these destinations. There are domestic flights available to Whitsunday Coast Airport from where it is just a 45 minute transfer to Airlie beach.

Mexico is a vast country with well publicised problems with gangs and organised crime. However, each region has different concerns and La Paz and Baja California have hosted tourists for a long period of time and have a relatively low crime rate compared to other areas. Many US citizens frequent the area every year for their holidays without any cause for concern. Many Americans and Canadians have also made this area their home.

In Baja California the summers are long and very hot. Winter can be more comfortable with dry and slightly cooler weather. In the summer period temperatures may reach 37-38 degrees Celsius and the sea temperature may reach 27 degrees Celsius.

Low season is between December and February with temperatures around 25-26 degrees Celsius and cooler evenings (due to the desert conditions). The highest rainfall is between July and October.

The best time for a sailing holiday in Mexico is between February and June and October and December.

The marine life in the La Paz sailing region is world-class and this area is a must-visit for nature lovers. Whale sharks migrate here to return to their breeding ground and proficient swimmers can take a local guide to swim and snorkel with the whale sharks as they come into the shallows - a once in a lifetime experience! Gray whales annually migrate here for their calfing season between December and April. They can often be seen from the boat and the shore.

Take a guided trip to Espirito Santu to swim with the sea lions and enjoy lunch on the beautiful white beaches, kayak into the mangroves or see the famous rock formation of El Hongo surrounded by the beautiful aquamarine waters that has become the emblem of La Paz.

Take some time ashore to learn to surf on some of the infamous surf beaches of Baja or enjoy a Margarita sundowner made from local tequila whilst watching the sunset over the Sea of Cortez and listening out for the calls of the whales.

For bareboat yacht charters in Mexico you will need to provide a sailing resume showing experience of sailing in similar conditions to those of Mexico. When you depart the harbour you will need to provide your passage plan for your charter period to the harbour authorities.

The cost of your yacht charter depends on several factors:

Boat Type

The type and size of the yacht you book will dictate the price. In Mexico you will find mostly catamarans available for charter. A 1 week charter on a 4 cabin catamaran starts around £3400 in low season whereas 1 week on 6 cabin catamaran with a skipper in high season could be upwards of £10,000. These are the 2 extremes of the scale for a 1 week charter and we offer plenty of choices in between.

1 week is a popular choice amongst our sailors and makes the perfect getaway however, a longer charter will give you more time to explore all the Sea of Cortez has to offer.

In the Baja peninsula there is 100+ nautical miles of coastline with many pristine beaches and remote peaceful anchorages. The winds generally blow from the south around Force 3-4. Tropical storms usually pass south of the peninsula. The sea state is sheltered within the Sea of Cortez (or the bay of California) due to the western side of the Baja peninsula breaking the waves rolling off the Pacific. It is a tidal area with a range of 1-1.5m and there can be strong localised currents to be aware of.

The rainy season in this area is between May and September but the rainfall often comes in short, sharp showers followed by beautiful sunshine.

The best sailing in Mexico can be found in Baja California, in the Bay of Cortez.

The cost of your yacht charter depends on several factors:

Boat Type

The type and size of the yacht you book will dictate the price. A 1 week charter on a 2 - 3 cabin monohull starts around £1400 in low season whereas a 1 week charter on a luxury catamaran with a skipper in high season could be upwards of £10,000. These are the 2 extremes of the scale for a 1 week charter and we offer plenty of choices in between.

Charter duration

1 week is a popular choice amongst our sailors and makes the perfect short Caribbean getaway. However, to make the most of your time sailing the Caribbean islands, a 10 day or 2 week yacht charter may be just the thing. We provide custom bareboat bookings which can be tailored to your timescale.

The mooring fees in the Caribbean vary depending on your sailing destination. There are very few marinas compared to sailing in the Mediterranean so most nights you are on anchor in a bay with a classic Caribbean white sand and palm tree beach.

In areas such as the British Virgin Islands, many locations have laid buoys which cost around US$30/night and give you a safe mooring within minutes of sailing into the bay.

Although useful to have one, a sailing license, certificate or qualification is not required for a Caribbean yacht charter, however, our partners will need to see a complete sailing resume.

The sailing resume for a Caribbean yacht charter must demonstrate experience as a skipper of a similar type and size (within five feet) of the yacht as the one you are looking to charter. The experience should also be recent and the company will look for experience within the last five years.

A 1 - 2 week charter will give you the optimum time to explore the Caribbean islands, from the palm fringed white sandy beaches to the hidden coves and underwater paradise. Our knowledgeable team can assist you with a custom charter to suit your needs.

We have various 1 and 2 week sailing itineraries for bareboat sailing holidays in the Caribbean that have been personally tried and tested by our team.
